Rioja wines are as diverse as our landscape, shaped by the terroir, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions passed down for generations. To make it easier to navigate, Rioja wines are classified into four aging categories: Rioja, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva—each with its own character and depth.

It all starts with the grapes. Tempranillo is our star, known for its structure and aging potential. But Rioja is more than Tempranillo—other reds like Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, and Maturana Tinta add complexity, while whites such as Viura, Malvasía, and Tempranillo Blanco bring freshness and elegance.

The key to Rioja wine is aging:

  • Rioja (Joven) – Young, fruity, and vibrant, with little to no oak aging.
  • Crianza – Aged at least 2 years (1 in oak), offering a balance between fruit and spice.
  • Reserva – Aged at least 3 years (1 in oak), more structured, with deeper flavors and elegance.
  • Gran Reserva – The most refined, aged 5+ years (at least 2 in oak), with smooth tannins and complex aromas.

Our cuisine is deeply rooted in tradition, yet in recent years, a new wave of chefs has brought fresh ideas while respecting our culinary heritage.

The secret? Fresh vegetables from the Ebro Valley, high-quality meats from the nearby mountains, and, of course, excellent olive oil. You can’t leave without trying patatas a la riojana, a humble but delicious stew of potatoes, chorizo, and paprika. Or chuletillas al sarmiento, lamb chops grilled over vine shoots—best enjoyed outdoors with a good bottle of Rioja! In winter, nothing beats a warm plate of caparrones, our famous red bean stew, especially when shared with friends and plenty of wine.

There’s no bad time to visit Rioja—each season has something special!

Winter (45–55°F) is chilly and sometimes rainy, but perfect for cozying up in a winery with a glass of red wine. For many of us, locals, the landscape is at its best at this time of the year! Spring (60–75°F) brings blooming vineyards, sunny terraces, and perfect weather for relaxed tastings. Summer (80–95°F) is lively, with local festivals, warm evenings, and endless tapas and wine.

And then there’s autumn (60–75°F)—the famous harvest season. The vineyards turn red and golden, wineries buzz with activity, and the whole region is at its most vibrant.
